Club History

Since its formation in 1981, Kirkintilloch Olympians has been a community based club which has proudly focused on developing young athletes as well as seniors. It was formed by Gordon Maclean and Henry Docherty to cater for the growing popularity of running especially distance running and sought to inspire and encourage the next generation of athletes.

Over the last few decades, the club has grown in size and in its competitive reach. We currently participate in cross country racing in the winter in the Dunbartonshire AAA events, in the West District championships, and in National championships.  In track and field, we participate in Central & South of Scotland Athletic League (CSSAL) and our junior members compete in the Youth Development League as part of a combined team representing East Dunbartonshire.

As part of our community development, the club has for many years organised an annual 10k race held in June, originally as part of the Kirkintilloch Gala week. The event brings together club and non-club runners, local people and others from across Scotland to participate in friendly competition.  In 2006 a 12.5k race was added to the club’s events calendar, offering a unique challenge over this distance and in 2011 the Neil McCover memorial half marathon has extended the club’s contribution to Scottish Athletics events.
